LODI , CALIFORNIA
A Century of Family Farming
For more than 120 years, the 60 acre property west of Lodi has been owned and farmed by the Spenker family. Today it is home to our winery and creamery.
Chuck and Bettyann met at a home winemaking party where it was love at first sight. They combined their talents and started Spenker Winery in 1994, as a way to maintain and demonstrate the high quality of their Zinfandel grapes.
Daughters, Kate and Sarah, grew up helping Mom and Dad run the winery, doing everything from sloshing in the mud to explaining the finer points of wine-making to customers. After college, they returned to the family business bringing their own spin to wine presentation and customer relations and encouraged the creation of Lodi’s first artisan creamery.
Creating the Perfect Blend
It takes a lot of creativity to make a farm successful. At Spenker Family Farm everyone blends their talents to make the best products and experiences for our customers and community.
Our family has quite diverse backgrounds and interests outside of farming. We definitely use all those skills around here!
Chuck is a 3rd generation grape farmer with a passion for history and winemaking. When he is not out riding the tractor or fixing things around the farm, he loves getting to know customers from around the world. His voracious reading habits and wealth of knowledge mean he can converse with them on a wide variety of topics. Preferably, over a glass of wine of course.
Bettyann grew up in the Rocky Mountains. Though she thought she would never live anywhere flat the San Joaquin Valley’s fertile soil (with no rocks!) and bountiful crops appealed to her botanist heart. The cute farmer she met the first week here also influenced her decision to stay. Her background in chemistry and plant science gets used every day in wine and cheese making. Her other skills in sewing, cooking, and teaching are a tremendous asset as well.
Herd manager was not exactly what Kate thought she’d end up doing when she studied art history in college. But she uses that experience to inspire her when designing all our product labels for the wine and cheese! Her creativity is also quite helpful in building housing and enrichment for the goats (who are constantly testing the quality of any workmanship.) Driving the skid-steer, working in the garden, playing the piano, reading up on all things goats, and planning her next projects to improve the farm-visitor-experience keep her busy.
Sarah has a flare for the dramatic - and excellent people skills! Her theater education and time spent working for a TV station in Sacramento helped hone her talent for clearly communicating our farm’s awesomeness in fun and interesting ways - in person, on social media, and on television. Her passion for directing allows her to set a clear vision for our family and business and guide and motivate us and our staff towards those goals. She is always eager to ensure everyone has a positive experience at SFF.
